Can you pay crypto trading fees with an exchange token for a discount?

On some exchanges, yes. MEXC lets you pay spot and USDT-M futures fees with its MX token at a discount: for spot you switch it on in your fee settings, and for futures it turns on once MX sits in your futures account and switches off when that MX runs out. Bybit lets you pay spot and futures fees with MNT, on top of your VIP rate, once you switch it on. OKX does not offer one — its trading fee FAQ says there is no feature to offset trading fees with OKB, and holding OKB doesn't change your fee tier. A token discount lowers the fee actually charged, and a fee rebate is a share of that fee, so the two stack.

How a token fee discount works

A token fee discount is a lower trading fee for paying fees with the exchange's own token instead of the asset you trade. The order is billed at your normal rate minus the discount, and the fee comes out of your token balance. Nothing else about the trade changes — maker and taker rates, your tier and the fee schedule still decide the starting rate (maker vs taker fees).

The trade-off is that you have to hold the token. Part of your balance then moves with that token's price, so the real value of the discount is the fee saved minus whatever the token does while you hold it.

MEXC: paying fees with MX

MEXC's guide "How to Use MX for Trading Fee Discounts" (published September 2026) says:

  • Products: the discount covers spot trading and USDT-M futures trading.
  • Spot: turn on the MX deduction on the fee page (web) or under Fee Settings in the app.
  • Futures: the deduction switches on automatically once you transfer MX to your futures account.
  • When MX runs out: spot falls back to the standard rate, and the futures deduction switches itself off.
  • No stacking with the holding discount: MEXC also has a discount for holding MX. The two can't be combined — the system applies whichever is larger.
  • Futures bonuses first: bonus funds are used before MX and get no deduction discount (how futures bonuses and rebates interact).
  • Limits: main and sub-accounts have separate benefits, some pairs follow different fee standards, and rates can vary by country or region.

The guide states a discount rate, but MEXC's fee page is the figure that applies to your account, so read it there while logged in.

OKX: no discount for OKB

OKX's "Trading Fee Rules FAQ" (updated September 2026) is direct: "The platform currently doesn't offer a feature that lets you offset trading fees by holding OKB." OKB is charged under the same fee rules as any other currency, there is no separate fee balance, and the fee is charged in the currency the trade produces (why spot fees come out of the coin you receive). OKX's X Layer FAQ (updated August 2026) adds that holding OKB doesn't affect fee discount tiers.

That FAQ also says OKB is the native token of the X Layer blockchain and is used to pay on-chain gas fees. A gas fee is the cost of a blockchain transaction — it has nothing to do with the fee for an order on the exchange. On OKX the discount lever is the VIP program instead: your fee tier is based on 30-day trading volume, and VIP levels are set by assets and volume (when a new VIP tier takes effect).

Bybit: paying fees with MNT

Bybit's "FAQ – Paying Trading Fees with MNT" (updated March 2026) says:

  • Products: Spot, Spot Margin, USDT Perpetual and Expiry contracts, USDC Perpetual contracts and Pre-Market trading. Inverse contracts aren't covered.
  • Switching it on: turn on Using MNT for fee discount under Fee Rate on the trading page (web) or from the three-dot menu on the app's trading page. Spot and futures have separate switches, and so do the main account and each sub-account.
  • Where the MNT sits: only MNT in your Unified Trading Account can pay fees.
  • Discount: applied on top of your VIP fee rate, with a larger cut on spot than on futures — the FAQ lists the discounted rate for each level.
  • Not covered: market makers, institutional, Pro and API users, plus orders from trading bots, copy trading as a follower, RFQ, API orders and liquidations. Only position opening and closing fees can be paid in MNT.
  • Not enough MNT: if your MNT can't cover the whole fee when the order is confirmed, the full fee is charged in the settlement currency at the standard rate — there are no partial MNT payments.

When there is no fee to discount

A token discount only cuts a fee that exists. If a pair runs a promotional fee rate of zero, or your order is a maker order on a zero maker rate, there is nothing for the token to pay (MEXC's zero-fee pairs and rebates). The discount matters on taker orders and on pairs that charge the normal rate.

Is it worth holding the token?

  • You already hold it for other reasons: turning the deduction on is a straight saving.
  • You would buy it only for the discount: compare the fees you expect to save over a month with how much the token could move against you over the same month. A modest fee bill rarely justifies a large token position.
  • Watch the balance: once the token runs out, MEXC's deduction stops and Bybit charges the full fee in the settlement currency, so fills go back to the standard rate — a check of the fee line after a trade tells you which rate applied (where to see the fees you paid).

Token discounts and fee rebates

A fee rebate is a percentage of the trading fee actually charged (up to 60% on partner exchanges), so a discounted fee means a smaller rebate on that trade — but your net cost is still lower than with either one alone, the same way a VIP tier and a rebate stack (fee rebates at VIP tiers). The rebate is worked out from the commission the exchange reports for your account, so after you switch a deduction on, compare your rebate history with the fee lines in your trade history. Standard maker and taker rates by exchange are on the crypto futures fee index. Rebate figures are estimates based on published fee schedules; token discount terms are set by each exchange and can change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay MEXC trading fees with MX?

Yes. MEXC's guide says MX can be used for a fee discount on spot and USDT-M futures. Spot is switched on in fee settings; futures turns on when MX is in your futures account and stops when that MX runs out.

Can I pay Bybit trading fees with MNT?

Yes. Bybit's FAQ says MNT in your Unified Trading Account can pay spot and most futures fees at a discount on top of your VIP rate. Turn it on separately for spot and futures; API orders, trading bots and copy trading as a follower aren't covered.

Does holding OKB lower OKX trading fees?

No. OKX's trading fee FAQ says there is no feature to offset trading fees by holding OKB, and its X Layer FAQ says holding OKB doesn't affect fee discount tiers. OKX fee tiers follow trading volume and, for VIP levels, assets.

Can the MX holding discount and the MX deduction be combined?

No. MEXC says the two can't be stacked; the system applies whichever discount is larger.

Does a fee rebate still apply when I pay fees with a token?

A rebate is a share of the fee actually charged, so it follows the discounted fee and gets smaller with it. Check your rebate history against your trade history after switching a deduction on.
